Coaching is a part of professional training process. The mind matters as much as the body.
Why is coaching important for athletes?
In addition to his academical background in psychology Markko has been an aspiring team athlete and is now directing his energy to various endurance sports. Markko knows that elite level sports has evolved into a highly specific science - it's not enough that you are the fastest nor the strongest. You will be the most successful only when both your body and your mind are trained to perform at the highest level. Only an elite level psyche will guarantee that your performances are maximal and mindful every day.
What kind of athletes benefit from coaching?
Coaching is necessary both for an individual athlete as well as for teams and team athletes. Coaching brings success equally to youth athletes, experienced professional athletes and amateurs that are willing to give their everything out there.
Together with the athlete we will train and improve the most important mental skills, for example maintaining focus and concentration or managing anxiety and emotions.
As the result of coaching the athlete is able to...
... cultivate and maintain positive attitude
… maintain high level of self-motivation
… set goals
… use positive self-talk and other mental tools to enhance performance
... deal effectively with criticism
These are just some of the skills that will help you reach your goals effectively and wisely. An athlete's time is expensive. That means everything needs to be done professionally and coaching plays an invaluable role in athletes mental preparation.
What experiences does Markko have combining sports and psychology?
Markko has played handball in Estonian national team for youth and juniors. After serving in the national army he took a different path. He became a diving instructor and has worked on three different continents. Underwater he has taken the responsibility of peoples lives in complex cave systems as well as in the ocean depths. In the recent years he has found passion in long distance running. Those physically and mentally challenging endeavours have helped him to test and know better his own mental limitations and how to overcome them. Markko is truly an example of theory meets practice as he applies the same techniques he uses himself also in his coaching work with you.
Markko has a passion for human boundaries. Combining that with his background in psychology and coaching training he knows how important are the mental strength and toughness for an athlete.
Markko has done scientific research in sports psychology, studying elite level sports teams and focussing on transformational leadership and it's impact in the team's success.
In short - the body will do what the mind tells. When the mind is in top condition then so is the body.
